IEEE 802.15.4

IEEE 802.15.4, a standardization of wireless specification defined by IEEE, is for wireless personal area networks (WPANs). IEEE 802.15.4 has characteristics such as low power, low cost and peer to peer network support. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard provides a framework for low data rate communications systems, typically sensor networks.

IEEE 802.15.4g Smart Utility Networks (SUN)

IEEE 802.15.4g, also known as the Smart Utility Networks (SUN) standard defines a PHY amendment to IEEE 802.15.4 that facilitates very large scale process control applications such as the utility Smart Grid Networks. It addresses outdoor low data rate wireless Smart Metering Utility Network requirements.

Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP)

Initiated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) played a leadership role in identifying applicable standards, gaps in currently available standards, and priorities for new standardization activities for the evolving Smart Grid.

Priority Action Plans (PAPs) arose from the analysis of the applicability of Standards to the Use Cases of the Smart Grid. PAPs include identified experts in relative SDOs, known as the PAP Working Group Management Team. PAP02 was formed to investigate the strengths, weaknesses, capabilities, and constraints of existing and emerging standards-based physical media for wireless communications.

OpenSG

The mission of the OpenSG Technical Subcommittee within UCAIug was to foster enhanced functionality, lower costs and speed market adoption of Advanced Metering networks and Demand Response solutions through the development of an open standards-based information/data model, reference design & interoperability guidelines.  It is currently in "hibernation" but the work produced has been highly influential in understanding some of the communication challenges of Smart Grid deployments.
